Limoges Brands - Markings of Limoges Boxes

How to tell what Brand Made my Limoges?

Is Limoges a company?

Limoges is not a Brand.  It is a city in France where Limoges porcelain is made, and is known to be the porcelain capital of  the world. So this type of porcelain that is made is named after the city Limoges.  Why ? Because it is the only place in the world where the clay Kaolin, the pure white translucent clay they make Limoges out of, can be found.

How to tell my Limoges Box Brand ? You mean the Manufacturer of the Porcelain made in Limoges right ?  Treasure hunters are often trying to find Limoges Boxes and collectibles that are not only beautiful, but also authentic. Many Limoges porcelain Box pieces are labeled and Branded as "Limoges" or "French Limoges" are not authentic Limoges from France, but rather rip offs from China.  Authentic French Limoges is a porcelain item manufactured in Limoges, France made with the clay Kaolin. When determining if the trinket Limoges box that you have is of value, you can authenticate that it was manufactured in Limoges and determine the time frame in which it was made by checking the mark on the bottom or back of the piece. Below is a list of the most common and popular Limoges Factories, Arteliers, Importers, Decorators and their markings and I guess an American would be prone to call it their Brands. If you cannot find what you are looking for below it is beyond the scope of Limoges Boutique to help you. Limoges Boutique only retails modern Limoges pieces. I would suggest finding an Antique Limoges Porcelain dealer for help.

Limoges Marks Worth Value

Porcelain production of modern day, has stuck by its roots in production from it's inception.  Only master skilled artisans know the secret ways of creating Limoges Porcelain, and to present modern day it has become an art of Antiquity. To this day there still remain a dozen or so small factories that produce this valuable porcelain, and various ateliers and decorators specialize to hand-paint the painting and hand-craft the metal work.  Lets look further at the history.

Most of the Limoges Marks of Production, Decorators, Importers, and Arteliers  you will See Around the World

There are thousands of Limoges boxes made by many different factories and so many different markings of the factories, workers, importers, producers, decorators, and ateliers. For 240 years, many small ateliers have created thousands of little "chefs d'Oeuvre" and it's impossible to list all of them. The most valuable pieces are the one that are very details & intricate and are clearly signed hand painted & limited edition individually numbered with the name of the atelier or Artist. Limited editions produce at 50, 100, 250, 500, 750, 1000 or 2500, will have a marking indicating which number the piece is. the Smallest production, the most valuable the piece is.Below are few Limoges companies and Limoges markings, as well as a little history and common questions. For info about Limoges Porcelain or for an estimate of your Limoges box, please send us 2 pictures of the piece you want us to appraise, 1 of the piece & 1 of the signature.
