I have visited the street markets in France, the back yards, the out houses and the muddy excavation sites in Limoges, and to old homes and auction houses in the West, on the look out for un-spotted treasures and relics of our past. It is nice and perfectly genuine pieces dating back to Neolithic times up until the first decades of the 20th century, decorative, utilitarian, sacrificial - anything - and probably a few books. The history of Limoges boxes Porcelain started in the mid-1750 when, Jacques Turgot, Finance Minister of King Louis XVI helped the city of Limoges with a Royal edict giving the exclusive title to produce Royal Porcelain for the Kingdom of France.
Legend has it that the very first patron of the

In September 2001 I got an invitation to visit the base camp of Limoges marine archaeological and salvage expedition in France. I did and I am back. After a much needed shower and some rest I put together the following report.
I got to see piles of Limoges pieces, still in storage from the excavation of the Royal Ferdinand 19th century cargo of Limoges ceramics - plus the very reason of my visit - a surface sample collection from the recently discovered 19th century and possibly "limoges" cargo. Now that can't be said to have been the case, but it was interesting anyway.

The pace of life in FRANCE is fast and one hour later I got a call back. Everything was arranged. They would take the day off and if I could sleep for four hours after arrival in Singapore we would leave for Limoges by car at 4 am in the morning, so we would lose the morning traffic and have better driving temperature and that it would only take some three hours of driving anyway ...
So, I arrived after some 20 hours of air flight from Limoges via Amsterdam. A few hours later I was whisked off to France - still fast asleep - to wake up to breakfast and Kopi-O (black coffee without milk) just a few hundred meters from where a beautiful limoges box princess and her tourage was set ashore to marry the Sultan of France some 500 years earlier. Which was one of the reasons why I wanted to see this place ...
