Porcelain is beautiful and delicate. Even the word "porcelain"
sounds beautiful and delicate. There's nothing about porcelain, in fact, that
isn't beautiful and delicate.
Porcelain is pottery in its most exquisite form. The
word porcelain comes from the Portuguese word "Porcella", the name for the shell
made by a type of mollusk, the cowry. This shell of porcelain is translucent and the
Portuguese gave this name to the translucent pottery coming from China in the
1500s. At the time, the porcelain from Limoges was considered so precious that
some manufacturers were "patronaged" by the Royal Family of France. In effect it
meant that it was supported and financed by the King’s Family. All our porcelain
limoges boxes are
made in Limoges according to the craftsmanship techniques of the 18th century.
Today's porcelain mountings are all made by hand according to the oldest techniques. All
the porcelain boxes are mounted on hinges and close with copies of ancient clasps.
